The three volumes are an extraordinary contribution to the understanding of world religion by an author who was dedicated to understanding why religion is so much a part of human culture. . I am not enough of an expert in the field to know if Eliade's ideas have been outstripped by subsequent research, but to a lay person he presents an excellent account of a plausible manner in which religions developed and diverged.
