I've been selling my tested.
Mine's never had an issue. It will teach you many things about the practical/sonic meaning of the word "modulation". All listings - Current page Auction Buy it now Classified Ads. That said, it's such a deep instrument that getting the most out of it will take some time. Cleaned up my Xpander and tons of other synths and drum machines. Very cool synth but reliability of chips scared me - I had to replace 4 during that time. I am a lucky chap who owns MKS-70 and MKS-80 (Rev 4 and 5 versions), and also an Oberheim Xpander (hi Paul N. - and thanks again!). Make Offer - Oberheim DPX-1 OS 2.2 ROM set update kit firmware DPX1 operating system. It is one of the few multi-timbral VCO synths ever produced; pretty sure the only one (and Matrix 12) from the eighties. Xpander polyphony is a bit low to get alot of mileage out of multi-timbrality. My Matrix 12 has a couple of video game-style sound effects programmed on it. A buddy bought one with a dead display, but was able to find a replacement. And it's a breeze to program, so intuitive. Xplorer may change things but I haven't tried it yet. When these Xpander/Matrix 12 threads arise I often see someone bring up slow envelopes. Whereas the MKS-70 is rich and woolly, and the MKS-80 is sharp and punchy, the Xpander is not only a mixture of the two, but is also much deeper in texture and capable of a broader spectrum of tones. Put some Deoxit on a Q-tip and coated the leads of the chips which seemed to help them connected better over time. And my synth repair guy, who's the best in LA, mentioned retiring in the next few years which scares the sh*t outta me. I had a short time to test Oberheim OB-Xa and I was stunned at the instant beautiful PWM strings and whatnot. These days I'd have a hard job convincing myself I'd be getting much more synth than what could be ably achieved with a couple of Prophet 8's. S$ 43.57 +S$ 5.84 postage. You could argue that Oberheim gave Xpander the tools to move into a whole different territory to OB-8 and in one sense you would be mad not to go there. From that period, the board I still finding myself gas'ing for is the Emulator II.Had 2 of them and a Matrix 12 back in the day. And all of them are subject to problems due to age. Although the vacuum fluorescent display and sheer size of them is still cool. They were cool for the time, and without the benefit of soundcloud demos etc or hearing one in the flesh, I thought they were something if a holy grail synth. Don't buy"as-is" parts. But Steve Porcaro of Toto does a masterful job of explaining how he likes to program the Xpander for brass and string sounds. Had to re-seat the chips every couple of months. Even if you don't have an Xpander, the same principles can be used on a Matrix6 variant, or early ensoniqs, etc. 5 NPN Transistor package.
In terms of modulation and multi-timbrality it can do very interesting things.
Oberheim Xpander, can anyone tell me what it's like, is it gritty and analogue, is it hard to program, what's the reliability like and does it live up to the legend? Also has some balls which the Oberheims lacked. It's true there are not a lot of good demos.
He will tell you where he's going, exaggerate the sound, then blend the individual oscillators in. Each voice can be assigned its own MIDI channel.
Moog ARP Oberheim. I have the new Prophet 6 which walks all of those things. Moog ARP Oberheim. It is simply fantastic.
All of those typically Oberheim-ish fat and brassy sounds … Oberheims fit my music better than any other synth manufacturer. I also find the new ROMpler Syntronik to have great Oberheim sample based patches.
5 NPN Transistor package. And even once you get programming, it can take a really long time to understand how to make the thing shine (took me years to fully appreciate it).
Had to re-seat the chips every couple of months. Refine.
I wouldn't say it's hard to program, the UI is laid out very logically and the options are all pretty standard. Although the vacuum fluorescent display and sheer size of them is still cool. Is Xpander anywhere close to OB-Xa / OB-8 in terms of strings and pad sounds? Abrasive to polished.
