He’s never been caught, because he plans carefully down to the last detail, and he always makes sure he has a way out if things go wrong. It’s a well-crafted tight noir story, but the spark of later-day Brubaker & Phillips collaborations is missing here — everything is a bit too lifeless and sterile, the characters are just cardboard cutouts without personality, and it’s all just a bit... blah. The art is atmospheric and a perfect match for the story.

Leo Patterson is one of my favorite of the Brubaker and Philips creations and Criminal is one of my favorite of their books. Then I decided to drop some dough on his work and give them a go, the first of which is his first book in the Brubaker and Phillips give us a story we've all read before, but they tell it so well it kept me hooked. But this latest job may be more than he bargained for ...I felt like the plot was all over the place in this one. I total recommend it. These feel lOur hero, Leo, is not a hero, and that's the point.
