Amazon calculates a product’s star ratings based on a machine learned model instead of a raw data average. Cuts like a machete, with a bit extra forward weight from the shallow axe-like head, for better chopping ability. This machete is actually not that bad. I don't see why so many people are whining about the quality of it. For 3/4" and smaller branches, the hook area where the blade transitions to the "axe" is where I found the easiest cutting. I bought this to take care of some exceptionally large weeds and some trail-clearing, and on its first trip outdoors my wife made a remark about how it looks like a crazy weapon.

I think this will be a fine item for trimming small brush and ferns close to the ground for metal detecting. The steel is of adequate quality but could be better. With a nice edge on it you just might be able to take on some of the thicker trees.
It is NOT a great hiking/expedition tool. The hooked shape is the absolute best for small branches and vines, it bites, holds, and severs with surgical precision.

And I hope most people know that this machete DOES NOT come sharpened. Made short work of everything. That's what I got it for. What more could you ask? Recently received this Machete-Axe monstrosity, and spent a good portion of the day clearing a crap-ton of small trees, brush, briars, etc.
That means extra swings of a very long blade.
I thought I missed because I felt no resistance and the weed was still there. The extra heft of the axe part drives the cut while the curved area locks the branch in for the cut. The steel isn't very good so the resulting edge will function OK but is nothing special.Fiskars machete sharp as hell, quality materials, and ... Also after months of using it, the blade area started to rust. The only tool for chopping Red Apple off of a chain link fence.It was not very sharp.
