The design of the temple has a Northern Chinese style with arts from the Tang Dynasty and Japanese inspired architecture. Constructed in the 16th century AD, the Temple of the Tooth is also known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa. This relic of the tooth of Buddha has been playing an important role in local politics as since centuries it has been believed that the governance of the country goes in the hands of those who rule the relics.
