We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". Do you want to like, figure out what the handles are and become aThere are lots of opportunities in that realm, which I think are immediate. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. "Scott Walker was just at the beginning of a presidential campaign. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. John: Hundreds. So I've been ticketing him with $5,000 tickets, $50,000 tickets with little notes. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. Here in a million person city and your ability to affect change, your platform, your ability to really make a difference is so incredible. Youre unbelievably inspirational. His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. How could we reduce our costs immediately knowing that we weren't operating? We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. power forward, who lives in Southern California but joins The Run whenever he travels to New York for his job in finance. We've gotten through conversations. And I know how much you love your brother and your family, your wife, your kids. You can imagine, yes, Id rather be in Miami for 180 days, no question. She's a teacher. Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. Its like, hey, I worry about the execution. We had to certainly do it on the resources, our facilities, we had to do it on the human capital, and then we had to change our whole perception which came from the owners on what we wanted to do on the court, which win an NBA championship and what we wanted to do off the court is be the innovators and be the leaders in the way we really operate. Theres no complexity. How do we change the model, and really put new metrics out there, for us to get it? Peter: You got it running the 70s, 80s and 90s, yep. I also listen, I thought, and my parents thought both my brother and I were as you can imagine before ADD was actually diagnosed, Peter: for kids our age and stuff, because its still be on impulsive, relentless, like, [inaudible]. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. You can always have free coffee. How does it really work? As you get older, its just harder to keep up with everybody, he said. John: Right. I didn't need to do anything. I answer that by saying like we were successful because at the time the Brooklyn Nets, the Orlando Magic, and a bunch of other teams were selfless with their help with us on how to have best practices on how to build an arena and how to build an infrastructure on how to form. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. John: Welcome to another edition of the impact podcast. "We didn't have much time," he says. We hired an unbelievable CFO. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. Whats going on with technology whats going on, even with your experience in the arena. "We have a really simple mantra. Welcome to the impact podcast, Peter. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. So, for people who run businesses, to have an operator who's really geared up and wants to drive revenue is kind of like a positive thing, especially for Mark and Wes. In a Q&A with The Undefeated, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin talked about resuming the season, the business lost due to COVID-19, and much more. Were going to constantly improve. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Peter: Well, I think its leadership 101, youve got to grasp where you are number one, and this was a very distressed brand company position. Peter Feigin: So, it was kind of crazy. It's about doing things for the right reasons. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. Thats and like you said, you get to share that with all the hundreds of other rings. And until next time, I'm Michael Red. How did you put the stadium deal together? The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. Let me just throw this out there. Theres some great things. And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. You're certainly allowed to have fun, because we have fun. Michael Red: Peter, Peter Feigin. We were literally refining, cared about all the cookies and stories in it and stuff. By the way, part of the culture here and part of the DNA is, before you come in and before you, youve got to want to be involved. There's got to be ways to get there. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's like I take everything from athletics. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? Michael Red: Giannis Antetokounmpo and that team is so special to watch. Malcolm D. Lee, who is directing Space Jam 2, which stars LeBron James, is one of the regulars in The Run. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. They better know you, they better get you. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. John: Whos raising their hand saying Dad, were all in with you. How does this work? Feigin's first task was evident right away. But that kind of thing. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. Then I think the big huge growth for NBA is how do we really figure out what our media is domestically and what it is internationally like in the next two years, which is changing dramatically. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. (There are perks to being commissioner.) Citation. And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. I'm just honored and grateful that you took the time to be on the cast today, man. Talk about your organization, community involvement, and the impacts that you get to make both positive and otherwise. But yet, still being leaders with more than a vote movement, just amazing, amazing. Youre going to have a lot of fun. John: I dont want to skip over that. As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. Number one, growth is so exponentially outside the us, which is like really interesting for NBA basketball, for participation, for media, for social consumption. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. In September 2013, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced that Bradley Center, the team's home since 1988, was unfit for an NBA team. I think if you took me at this point in my life and where I am and. Here's your Asian Americans. So when I talked to her, I said, hey, Ive got to tell you, first of all, the executive committee at Saturday morning run says, this is a good thing. We got to like we want to use our platform to affect change and change the world. And I know you had a background in marketing and you worked with the Knicks at certain points in your career. Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. I think that was a necessity. Well, you know about the ice cream truck. With a B? Woodhouse recalled asking him. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician who was a three-year starter at Colgate, joined the game in his mid-20s at the urging of a friend. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. Listen, for the rest of my life, having a boycott for the game in the bubble where we put a pause in the world. This is COVID, how do we do it? The most recent All-Star Game voting returns showed Antetokounmpo at 1.48 million votes, trailing only James. Anybody who wants to joust with me or do anything, I was like, "Well, just tell me where you're against the equality. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. What a wonderful experience. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". Just try to be quiet. Peter Feigin: That's right. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. I'm like, "I don't know. Michael Red: If you had to go back to your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give your 16-year-old self? I wanted to be in marketing in sales. The one thing about you that I've seen over the years is that you keep the culture in a funny mood, right? Okay. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's kind of where is the balance? Peter: Married. I just wanted to get it done and kind of move the needle and kind of. Peter is a serious businessman and a hilarious friend. And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. He's Peter Feigin, president of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, and in the nearly five years of living in the city he has come to Gee's Clippers so that Gaulien Smith, a black man, can tame his head. Peter: We didnt finish the championship till mid-July, which meant like we didnt have long to get the rings included. Talk about that. You talk about how do people help you think through clutch times. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. So, thank you for being on the cast today. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. Thats for every aspect of it. Let them know they're part of the family. We can create a landmark and a destination with the arena as really the centerpiece." I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. We pivoted and our kids were able to finish high school in New York and we made it work and now weve been Wisconsin residents from New York City, which is a whole other interesting transition. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. Now youre there, youre rebuilding. John: Thats awesome. When you think about it, what else would you be doing? Peter: Well, I always default to the Cluckery. I think weve gravitated again with a lot of people weve brought in to engage and get it done. So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. Peter Feigin: Yeah. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. But I could swear by the 10th time it happened, it was not an accident.. Hes with us today. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. Where does it sit? Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. Crazy story of how things happened. And I'm not that much of a spiritual person, but I feel like I have been blessed/lucky 10 times more than I ever thought I'd be in my whole life. Players, for 50 nights a year, land at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning to get home and kind of do what the time balance is. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. John: Got it. Last year, he was sidelined for several months while he recovered from an eye injury he had sustained in The Run. Hes very straightforward. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. The world is incredible. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. On the team, it takes extreme like investment to keep it. You're exactly right. You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. It all starts with the answer, right? By the way, its so much fun. Peter: its not the biggest, but it just talks about how special when you talk about in a small market, and we try to coalesce with the Brewers and the Packers as much as we can to be like the strength of these three pro teams and their players and their coaches and our coaches and GM spend a lot of time with the coaches and GMs at the Packers, which is just great. Just so I get a little. John: Talk about and want you to share a couple of thoughts about Warren Buffett and that whole deal. Peter Feigin: Yeah. He loves people and he'll go nearly to any length to support, develop and back the people he works with. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. Peter Feigin: I mean, I'll tell you an interesting story. So, I might have caught myself parking in that situation a couple of times as well and he's starting to document it, that I was a hypocrite. Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. It's got so many other opportunities I never would have thought of ever." Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. John: Unbelievable. Because there's a lot of founders and entrepreneurs that listen to this as well and managing that dynamic with their family. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. And we come from a city that's the urban city is 40% African American and probably 20% Hispanic, right? power forward, Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician. It's the same way she'll listen through what I'm going through. How do we affect the community together? It was July. Does he play defense?. It has huge value and its paid huge returns for us. Right? Youre going to have to work your butt off because its work. John: Right. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. And so, talk about that and your leadership style, generosity and how important it is to give back. You miss making a game-winning shot. He really taught me the lesson late in life is the real geniuses or the ones who can take these complex things and talk to me about them and I understand them. But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. Kearns has been shooting at an abandoned hoop that he discovered behind a train station in Connecticut. How do we talk beyond just coming to Milwaukee, but how do we do business together? What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. Im so proud and honored to have this conversation with you today, and thank you for your generosity of your time. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. We happen to have like the largest kitchen in the state of Wisconsin. John: Thats so true. John: He was gone. Peter: did active, to get in. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. There's always joking, a lot of joking and the team, the organization from what I've heard and know of you is that they really, really, really appreciate your leadership within the organization. Michael Red: Talk about the process of redeveloping downtown and one who's so in love with Milwaukee and it's like a second home to me, living there for so many years. And I didn't need to get paid. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. We're going to develop some residential and we'll hopefully have a great commercial tenant and we continue to build. The facilities part was easy. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest. So, I don't think uncommon to probably everybody and certainly every leader, everybody who has a real responsibility, the last 12 months were like nothing we could have ever imagined, we could have ever thought about and really reacted to. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. Are you now being used as a paradigm by other team presidents, GMs owners that are looking to you and coming to you for advice or for just pearls of wisdom of how can we do it because heres where we sit in baseball or in football or in basketball because they want to follow this amazing path and journey that you guys have created there? They just happen to be huge group buys of 200-300 people with Greek flags behind the visiting bench. How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? His own social presence is so valuable, is so great. I'm so proud of him and the team and the roster. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. I literally said, "Hey, Giannis, do me a favor. You were very part of that whole Marquis Jet, NetJet thing too, right? So, for all the listeners, I played in Milwaukee for 11 years over a decade and had an incredible time there. And we'll get to social injustice in a bit. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. And we're going to be the No. Right? 2023 ERI. He wanted to keep the team, which was a big catalyst for the whole movement.". And kind of like who are intrinsically becoming Buck stars and having them be our influencers around the world and thinking about global campaign. And you know what their experience is? "Instantaneously, overnight, we have 30 million people playing NBA 2K around the world, probably more, so we begin a league and we have competition on a global basis. Now, you had private equity partners. We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. Peter Feigin: I think nobody could have imagined what that does to you on a personal psychological emotional level. John: Its so amazing you say that. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. Theres a lot of people that look up to you and want to be either the next Peter Feigin, or be an entrepreneur and do a startup. Peter: Yeah, I think the credible and constancy is like NFTs and, are in the next phase. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. Proud of him and all the success. Im probably like someone who gives everything away. "I have a 14-year-old boy who can basically tell me every single player in the NBA, as well as G-League, what Europeans are playing all through NBA 2K," Feigin says. Its gotten through its first iteration to see where it is. I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! How exhausting was the bubble? Its hundreds of rings. So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? So it was kind of building rapport and trust was the only way to kind of get this done. I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. Either it came from Khris Middleton or Jack [crosstalk 00:02:21]. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. How do we build the baselines? Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? But usually, The Run comprises a core group of 15 to 20 players who range from 16 to 58 years old. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. It's definitely not brain surgery. Obviously, your assistant help set this up. Peter: Wow. And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. We're not only going to be public, we're going to privately help kind of move the cause and funding. You end up with a Jew holiday, who is this incredible, understated, all star. He simplified the housing market for me. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked. Talk about that process. And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. Were going to appreciate the hell out of you. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. John: Another native New Yorker from Roslyn, New York. But, boy, you talk about how you go to sleep like the night, a night in March, in the middle of March last year thinking like, "Oh, my God. That's the way we think about it. Then you mirror that off the court. This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. That sounds like a little piece, but that's a big piece in the world. The players, nobody has the awareness that, most of our players are between 20 and 30 years old and it's like for the rest of the world, it's like the most developmental time. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". And my brother said, "Oh, my God. And how did that all come about? He captained. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. You didnt study sports. And we skewed higher than most NBA teams. We had Chris Middleton and Giannis involved in it kind of conceptually, and really fun conversations with Giannis brother Costas had just won for the Lakers the year before. She is like, "We're in this together." Thats a good run. We are one big family. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? And Peter, now is the President of the Milwaukee Bucks and has done an incredible job over the years with the Bucks since he's landed in Milwaukee. It's like how do I hold my impulsive self to shut the hell up. Peter Feigin: So, that was and sort of weird comfort in that everybody in the world was going through it.
